The 1982 Race was when Clark Jones and Gary Jones had the battle of the Full Floaters really going, We had taken mine out to Bertus's shop and spent some time making it run right.
This bike was always a work in progress , Getting it jetted right..I don't think we ever really perfected that , Gary , had been asking me to build an airbox , it had always used a clamp on filter , right on the carb , which we put a clean one on between races, that never got done , I tried several variations , but every one restricted the air flow.
The bike ran good for this race...Pete was continually trying to lighten the other bike up ( owned by Larry Escamilla ) he made a special front axle for the bike , the axle ended up breaking and that ended the duel, Gary took second as Phil Oveland won the Championship in both classes...
In 1982 I brought my 1968 250 Twinpiper back to life , I rode it in the stock 250 class and showed it in the Bike Show, finishing almost last , I cringed every time there was a jump as I did not want to smash the original pipes on the famous Saddleback hard pack dirt, there were as the article states about 60 entries, Jim Keeton also had a perfect 250 Twinpiper , it came down to those two bikes ..
I won only because my bike had original paint on the frame, Jim's was repainted, after this race I put special race bike pipes on it , and took off the original fenders and seat, I raced it in vintage races for the next 7 years , In 1988 it was shipped to the UK where I raced it as part of the US Team in the British Bike Bonanza, I had bad luck , that's another story..
Today my Twinport sits here in my office , however at this years Don Matthews CZ World Championships it won the Best Twinport coffee mug...
