MXA, Jody Wiesel, Pete Maly, Larry Escamilla, Bertus, Dennis Cox, Gary Jones, Jim Beltnick, SMX and me all worked together on the first two CZ World Championships, and Jim Beltnick and I ran the rest after that. Pete Maly, Jody Wiesel and Jim Beltnick taught me how to run a race, and we carried the MXA label on our ads for a few years. Jody supported our efforts, lining up prizes and racing bibs that were given away at the races.
This is how the race was started. The first years, the focus was on who had the trickest CZ out there. We built all kinds of long travel bikes trying to keep up with development in the MX world at the time. In 1980 when we started, there were tons of stock CZ's in garages all over California. Once the word got out, guys started bringing them out...
The most amazing thing about the early years of the race was discovering how beloved the CZ brand was. The loyalty to the brand was out of this world. Honestly, this race caught on immediately, as Cycle News published a great article about the first one....
